Overview
Developed by Larian Studios, Baldur's Gate 3 is a turn-based RPG set in the Forgotten Realms universe based on Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition rules. After a lengthy early access period, it launched as a fully polished, staggeringly large game that has since become a benchmark for the RPG genre.
Storytelling and Writing
The writing in BG3 is nothing short of exceptional. The main quest — centered around a mysterious parasite implanted in your brain — is compelling on its own, but the game truly shines in its companion characters. Each companion has a fully fleshed-out backstory, personal quest, and evolving relationship with the player character.
The dialogue system reacts meaningfully to your race, class, background, and choices. You can talk, deceive, intimidate, or charm your way through much of the game, and the world consistently responds. Side quests feel as substantial as main storylines in other games.
Gameplay and Combat
BG3 uses a turn-based combat system derived from D&D 5e rules. Combat involves positioning, action economy, spell slots, and environmental interactions — throwing barrels, pushing enemies off ledges, creating fire surfaces to spread damage. It's deeply tactical and rewarding.
- Character Building: 12 base classes with extensive subclass options give immense build variety.
- Exploration: The world is dense with secrets, hidden passages, and optional content.
- Co-op: Up to 4 players can experience the full campaign together, each playing their own character.
Visuals and Performance
BG3 is a visually impressive game with detailed environments ranging from sunlit forests to crumbling underdark caverns. Character models are highly detailed, especially in the abundant cinematic cutscenes. Performance on high-end PCs is excellent; on consoles, it runs well with occasional load time differences.
What Could Be Better
No game is perfect. BG3 has a few rough edges worth noting:
- The third act feels slightly rushed compared to the meticulous pacing of Acts 1 and 2.
- The sheer volume of systems can overwhelm newcomers to CRPGs or D&D.
- Save file bloat can become an issue after many hours.
